Healthy People 2010
Healthy
People 2010 is a set of national health objectives for
the United States created by the Office of Disease Prevention
and Health Promotion, within the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, and its partners. It can be used by many
different people, states, communities, and professional organizations
to help them develop programs, practices, and policies to
improve health.
Healthy People 2010 is designed to achieve two
overarching goals:
- to help individuals of all ages increase life expectancy
and improve their quality of life and
- to eliminate health disparities among different segments
of the population.
To focus community efforts toward critical health-related
issues that are most likely to help the nation achieve these
goals and where progress can be measured, Healthy People 2010
has identified ten leading health indicators:
- Physical activity
- Tobacco use
- Responsible sexual behavior
- Injury and violence
- Immunization
- Overweight and obesity
- Substance abuse
- Mental health
- Environmental quality
- Access to health care
The K-State Research and Extension Community
Health Institute (CHI) focuses its work on the following activities:
promoting physical activity, encouraging healthy eating habits,
promoting positive social development to prevent problem behaviors
of tobacco use, violence, intentional injury, substance abuse,
teen pregnancy and delinquency. Promoting healthy behavior
and its long-lasting positive impacts is best done through
the development of healthy places – where people live,
learn, work and play. |
